“Last year we played in a huge barn at Truck Nine festival,” says Dave Konopka (bass/guitars) of math rock band Battles. “We had our pictures taken with cows - not the band, the farmyard animals.”
New York band Battles caused a stir in 2006 when Warp Records bundled together and re-released a string of their EPs. Ears were turned to the scattered drums, fractured melodies and beautiful cacophony of sound that ensued.
“The EPs were our first batch of recordings,” says Tyondai Braxton (vocals/sounds). “We toured so much on the EPs. We knew we had to write new material, but also saw how far we could go with the old material. We became a better band in the process.”
“When Warp re-released the EPs, it gave them a whole new burst. So we spent more time pushing them,” says Konopka. “That meant we had more time to spawn ideas. When it came to write the album, it was a healthy creative process. When you go on tour and play live, you find other nuances in the music. The songs are a different animal when played out.” >>
